Joe Beasley serves as the President of the African Ascension and the Joe Beasley Foundation; He is also the Southern Regional Director of the National Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and Human Services Director of the Antioch Baptist Church North, under the leadership of Pastor Cameron M. Alexander.
Joe Beasley was born to sharecroppers on a rural plantation in Inman, Georgia on December 27, 1936. He attended a segregated one-room school house for his primary education before moving with his family to Cincinnati, Ohio. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice at Park College and attended graduate school for his advanced studies in Criminal Justice at Clark Atlanta University.
In December 1956, He joined the United States Air Force where he served for 21 years in various missions in England, Spain, Thailand, Morocco, Guam and Vietnam. As a serviceman, he founded several initiatives to support fellow African-Americans servicemen including, "The Society for Black Unity" and "Brothers United Together" before his retirement as a Police Superintendent in June, 1978. He joined Operation PUSH as a Member of the Board of Directors and became the Executive Director for its Kansas City Affiliate, he later moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he was named Chapter Coordinator prior to his 1995 appointment as the Southern Regional Director.
In (1984 & 1988), he served as Georgia Deputy Director for Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., U.S. Presidential Campaign, Executive Director of the Antioch Urban Ministries, Inc (1991-2002), First African-American President of the Christian Council of Metropolitan Atlanta (1991-1993), and as a Member of the Peace Makers Tour, travelling to the Middle East (1992), South Korea (1993 & 1995) and helped institute the Atlanta Friendship Council (1998) to foster understanding between Koreans and African-Americans.
In 1993, he joined the Africa National Congress and volunteered in a campaign to register voters during South Africa elections (1994); he championed for the end of the apartheid regime in South Africa, release of Nelson Mandela from prison and supported his bid for election as President of South Africa. In 1995, He served as an election Monitor to Haiti during the second democratic election.
Joe Beasley has sought the audience and met with Key representative of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. He visited Palestinian Refugee Camp in Amman, Jordan and consulted with the Israel Government on ways to advance the course of peace in the Middle East. He has met and held discussions with high ranking government officials in Columbia, Haiti, Zambia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Brazil, and Kenya.
His philanthropic initiative extends over thirteen years in Haiti, where he supports the improvement of healthcare and education through construction of medical facilities and schools. He instituted the formation of Zumbi dos Palmares University in Brazil from funding of various corporations. He has expanded his humanitarian initiatives with various shipments of more $ 1 Million each in medical supplies to Monrovia-Liberia, Lusaka-Zambia, San Andris Islands in Colombia & Haiti.
As a citizen Diplomat, He has hosted over 42 high-ranking international visitors representing over 25 countries in Atlanta, Georgia. Likewise, in his international visits abroad, he has participated in conferences, events and symposiums including: The 8th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World Summit in Luncknow, India; The Regional Council of Tuscany and "Festival of Tuscany" on abolition of death penalty in Florence, Italy; The 2001 African-American Celebration by the U.S. Army, in Kosovo, Germany; The U.N Habitat II Conference on sustainable communities in Istanbul, Turkey and the U.N. World Conference on Racism in Durban, South Africa. He has been featured in different international diaries including Ebony, Columbia; NTV in Kenya, Zambia and Brazil.
He has also authored several articles and opinion pieces that have appeared in the Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the Atlanta New Leader, among others.
Joe Beasley was voted "One of Atlanta's Men of Influence (2009-2010), by Atlanta Business League, "125 Most Influential People in Atlanta" (1996-2009) by Atlanta News Weekly, "Top 50 African American Men in Georgia" (1998-2009) by the Macon Informer, "2009 Advocate of the year" by Georgia Informer and "Citizen of the Decade" by Public Citizen.
His other international accolades and honors includes- "The Toussaint Louverture Man of the Millennium Award" by the Mission Ste Therese de L'Enfant Jesus (Taipo, Haiti); The 2003 Black Oscar Award (Brazilian Foundation, Sao Paulo, Brazil), Georgia State Senate Recognition Award, (Georgia General Assembly), Profile in Courage Award (National Rainbow/Push Coalition), Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award (Rollins School of Public Health), Trailblazer Award for Community Service (Antioch Baptist Church North) and the National Assembly of Korea for his contribution in deepening friendship between Korea and United States.
